Fun With Mandarin Preschool and Daycare

"What we learn with pleasure we never forget."

Alfred Mercier

Fun With Mandarin Preschool is a Progressive Reggio Emilia Influenced Chinese (Mandarin) Immersion preschool and care program for children 18 months and through entry into kindergarten in San Francisco.  We aim to offer a large variety of deeply-enriching and complete indoor and outdoor experiences to support the comprehensive and linguistic development of children.  We seek to work with parents through a strong, supportive community approach to supporting whole-child development.  We are located near City College and are conveniently accessible from Highway 280, 101, and 19th Avenue.  Our recently-created Capitol Avenue facility consists of over 3,000 square feet of indoor and over 3,200 square feet of outdoor space carefully designed by experts in early childhood education.  We are “Reggio Emilia Influenced” in our child-centered and community-supported orientation, while at the same time, we seek to integrate the best elements of other philosophies that emphasize project-based and play-based learning together with our knowledge of up-to-date Early Childhood Education concepts to create deeply-enriching learning environments and curriculum.

Our hours are 8:15 am to 5:45 pm, Monday through Friday.  Children are provided with healthy meals throughout the day that include an am snack, lunch, and pm snack.  We offer two-day, three-day, and five-day schedules and rolling enrollment throughout the year, though the majority of students begin in the summer and early fall after other students graduate.

Our exceptional level of expertise and experience, child-centered focus, and ideal size allow us to emphasize comprehensive development simultaneously with Mandarin immersion.

Our school uses a colorful, multi-dimensional theme-based approach with an emphasis on fostering the children’s confidence and independence through a multitude of minds-on and hands-on activities.  The wide variety of self-led and collaborative activities foster the growth of the children’s individual and interpersonal skills.  We have a strong appreciation for the natural curiosity of children and see fun and fascination as guides and engines for supporting and guiding learning in natural and fun ways that engage the children as they grow into young creative learners with greater and greater confidence in their own abilities.

The goal and concept that inspired our school’s name “Fun With Mandarin” was the learning of language in a natural, fun way that greatly enriches the children’s overall development.  In our program, children learn Mandarin and other subjects in natural fun ways that support their overall development and through an explorative approach that we feel is a critical part of a happy explorative childhood.  We feel this approach leads gradually to well-rounded capable adults that can one day serve as broad-minded leaders in our community and complex global citizens.  Year after year, we have seen that no background in Chinese languages (or any second language) is needed to succeed in our program, and we value the diversity of our strong community and how we can all grow from learning about other cultures and experiences.  Of course, we can all benefit and grow as people and families from learning about other cultures and languages and we consider the appreciation and exploration of multiple cultures to be a cornerstone of our program that adds endless color and depth.

We take children’s comprehensive preparedness seriously and cater learning differently to each age group in our program to best support their individual needs.  Through year after year of positive feedback and through our continued connectiveness with the graduate community, we have seen how the comprehensive foundation that we help achieve at Fun With Mandarin helps children to succeed in the long run as “whole learners”.  Our graduates are very well-prepared for continued Mandarin immersion education and elementary school, in general, through that strong comprehensive foundation.

Through study, group problem-solving, limitless hands-on activities, and Reggio-Emilia inspired guidance, the children learn to express themselves, build confidence and socio-emotional skills, develop problem-solving skills, and enjoy the happiness of learning, all in an environment highly conducive to their happy childhood years.  In addition to learning another language, the children will explore another culture, make new friends and get better equipped to excel in this globalized world!
